Abstract painting foundations
WHAT TO EXPECT
Abstract Painting Foundations is an ongoing monthly class designed for beginner-to-intermediate artists interested in exploring abstract art through paint and mixed media. Each month focuses on a different theme and introduces techniques such as layering, composition, mark-making, texture, and mixed-media processes.
Through step-by-step demonstrations, guided exercises, and individual support, you will create your own abstract artwork while exploring a range of visual styles. Inspired by contemporary artists, this class encourages experimentation and personal expression within a supportive creative community.
Each month is designed as a stand alone experience, so you're welcome to join at any point.
Thursdays @ 630 pm (Starting August)
Upcoming Themes
August - Movement
Acrylic Paint, Graphite & Paint Markers
This month explores energy, rhythm, and expressive mark-making. Students will learn how to build dynamic abstract compositions using layers of paint, drawing, and graphic marks while creating a finished contemporary abstract painting inspired by Joan Mitchell.
September - Color & Atmosphere
Acrylic Paint & Soft Paste
Students will explore how color can create mood, depth, and visual impact. Through layering paint and pastel, they'll learn how contemporary abstract artists such as Emily Manson use color relationships to build atmosphere and strengthen a composition.
October - Chance & Discovery
Acrylic Paint & Acrylic Ink
This month focuses on experimentation and embracing the unexpected. Students will use fluid paint and ink techniques to create spontaneous marks and learn how to respond to those moments to develop a successful abstract painting. Inspired by the layered abstract paintings of Gerhard Richter, particularly his process of building, obscuring, scraping, and revealing paint to create unexpected compositions.
