Beginner Pottery
WHAT TO EXPECT
A full introduction to ceramics and working with clay, this beginner pottery class in Salt Lake City covers the basics of handbuilding and wheel throwing. An experienced teacher guides you through hands-on exercises that build your skills in creating bowls and cups.
By the end of this six-week beginner ceramics class, you'll feel comfortable using the equipment, making a range of pieces, and trimming and glazing your work. You'll also finish with a small collection of finished pottery pieces to take home.

6-WEEK Classes
Class Curriculum
Week 1 - Introduction to Handbuilding
Learn the fundamentals of handbuilding (pinch, coil, slab)
Prep slabs and discuss their use and when each is appropriate
Construct a pinch pot
Discuss and make coils as a group
Combine all three techniques to build a vase
Weeks 2-3 - Introduction to Wheel Throwing
Focus on centering and getting comfortable on the wheel
Throw cylinders to practice basic techniques
Create bowls and cups as your final pieces
Week 4 - Project Day
Choose how you spend your time, on the wheel or handbuilding
Create your own unique piece based on everything you've learned
Get personalized feedback and advice from our teachers
Week 5 - Introduction to Trimming
Explore basic trimming techniques and finish the projects you made on the wheel
Week 6 - Introduction to Glazing
Learn the full glaze process, including safety, dipping, painting, and underglaze application
What to Bring
Please be sure to dress in comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting clay on!
We will provide all of the tools, materials, and clay you need during this class.
If you'd like to take yours home, you can either bring an 8 piece pottery kit or buy one from us for $19. (Optional!)
