Workshop Description
Join local potter Dorian and explore the techniques and problem-solving behind creating functional ceramic jars with nicely-fitting lids. With demonstration and hands-on practice, we’ll be learning how to properly use measuring tools like calipers, and learn techniques for practical and simple lid-making. Finally, we’ll also cover basic strategies for glazing and handles that add your own touch and character to finished pieces. Whether you're making storage jars, tea caddies, or decorative vessels, you'll leave with the knowledge and techniques to create lids that fit beautifully and function reliably.
During this workshop we’re going to be covering:
Prepping and planning for a lidded piece
Proper tool selection and use
Demo and practice drop lids (think teapot) or flange lids (think cookie jar)
Basics of glazing and design concerns
Examining and discussing both good and bad finished piece examples
Students will learn through lecture and demo before being set loose on the wheel to practice what we’ve discussed, and will leave with a better understanding and new strategies to make their dream lidded pieces come to life.This workshop will include wheel-time, a set of your own calipers to keep, and up to three pieces to take home!
