Workshop description

During this three-day workshop we will discuss the necessity of painting from life, and how plein-air painting can make working from photos in the studio a much more enjoyable process. Time will be spent painting both from life and from photos. The instructor will open each day with a lecture and demonstration after which students will paint and receive individual critiques of their work. The class will focus on learning to see like an artist, emphasizing the fundamental principles necessary to accurately capture the beauty of nature when painting outdoors and in the studio. Among topics covered will be: values, hue, saturation, drawing, edges, design, and paint application. We will also discuss artistic style, and the importance of painting from life as a means to developing one’s own individual voice.
