Charcoal- preferably non-compressed, but those are hard to find. Vine charcoal, wood encased charcoal, charcoal sticks are all great. I recommend Nitram charcoal sticks for the best quality and most traditional use- one box of B and one H will do.

Decent Charcoal Paper- Something with a bit of tooth around 18×24" large. I recommend a pad of Strathmore Charcoal Paper, painting paper or woven cotton paper. It's important the charcoal has texture to hold it.

A drawing board- anything rigid, flat and large enough to place your drawing on.

Pencil- Any set with a range of pencils from H-6B.
