Throwing Large Forms on the Wheel with Molly Wireman

Workshop Description

So, you've learned the basics of wheel-throwing, and now you're ready to start making larger vessels! In this workshop, you'll learn how to create complex shapes and control large amounts of clay without straining yourself physically. You'll be given up to 50 pounds of clay, and through demos and lots of practice, will finish the day throwing 8-12 pound pots!

Schedule: 8 hours w/ lunch break (10 am - 6 pm)
- Wedging large amounts of clay - spiral wedging demo and practice
- Demo: throwing a large cylinder & learning how to make adjustments depending on desired shape
- Practice: throwing with 4-6 pounds (first a cylinder, then exploring different shapes)
- Break for lunch - 1 hour
- Demo: throwing & shaping 12 pounds of clay, explore how to make a large bottleneck form
- Practice: 8-12 pounds of clay, students will have the opportunity to keep/fire vessels made during the final practice session


Please note: the clay weights listed are a range rather than exact numbers because the exact amount may vary based on skill level.

Molly Wireman focuses on large scale pottery, production functional wares, and illustrations on clay. She has done ceramics since she was a child and loves the challenge of making complex, large vessels on the wheel. Molly has taught ceramics for over 2 years at Visual Art Institute, and enjoys sharing her knowledge of the craft with others.
