Workshop Description
You know that clay is earth, but do you ever wonder what it’s actually made of? Or what really happens to it when we fire it? Join Dorian, the chemist-turned-potter, as he explores the fascinating science behind pottery in this hands-on workshop that connects art with physics and chemistry.
Through the lens of science we’ll be answering questions like…
What does wedging do to the clay?
Why do S-cracks form on some pieces and not others?
Why does the ideal wheel speed sometimes feel hard to find? What does the wheel speed actually do?
How can I tell if the glaze in the bucket is right?
How can I predict and plan for more consistent glazing wins?
There will be loads of examples and demos, too!

Glazed Piece Examples: Crazed and Blemished, Microscopic looks at glossy and ‘smooth matte’ glazes, and Crackle/Raku
Physical Science Demos: Physics of the Wheel (hands on), ‘short’ clay vs porcelain examples, and glaze tiles with a digital microscope
Together our investigative journey will take us from crucial physical forces on the wheel all the way to how electric charges affect the glaze in your bucket, and show you how understanding the ‘why’ can help you master the ‘how.’ You’ll leave with a more analytical and practical perspective on ceramics as an art, and a clearer view of how to approach ceramics goals and challenges in the future.
